The real problem isn't software. It's whose zones you're using.
Most swim training software ships with a zone model baked in. Usually it's some version of the five- or seven-zone system built around percentages of a time trial or a lactate curve that was standardized for a different population than the one on your deck. That's fine as a starting point. It's a problem when the software treats those zones as fact and starts flagging your sets as "wrong" because they don't match its assumptions.
You didn't build your program around someone else's periodization model. You built it around what your athletes respond to, how your season is structured around your championship meets, and how you personally define aerobic threshold, VO2max work, and speed. A tool that checks your workouts against a generic philosophy is checking them against the wrong thing.
What "your philosophy" actually consists of
Before you can ask any tool — software or a whiteboard — to check your sets against your own standards, you need those standards written down as concrete rules. Most coaches carry this in their heads. Here's what it usually breaks down into:
- Zone anchors. What test or time do you use to set threshold pace? CSS from a 400/200 swim, a T-30, a straight 1000 time trial. This matters because it changes every pace on the sheet.
- Zone bandwidths. How many seconds per 100 wide is your threshold zone. Some coaches run a tight ±1 second band. Others run ±3.
- Energy system labels. Do you call broken 100s on 15 seconds rest "aerobic capacity" or "aerobic power"? Different programs use different names for similar work — the label matters less than being consistent with your own.
- Weekly load distribution. Your own rule for how much of the week is aerobic base versus race-pace versus true sprint. A club that races mostly 200s might run 70 percent aerobic, 20 percent threshold, 10 percent speed in base phase. A sprint group might invert that even in September.
- Rest and stroke count expectations. Your own tolerances for what counts as "held" versus "broken down" technically under fatigue.
If you haven't written these down, that's the actual first step — not finding software. A tool can only check a set against your philosophy if your philosophy exists somewhere as explicit rules rather than instinct.
An example of what "checking against your own system" looks like
Say your personal threshold standard is CSS pace, tested from a 400/200 time trial, and your rule is that lactate-threshold main sets should sit within 2 seconds per 100 of that pace with 10-20 seconds rest.
A swimmer's CSS comes out to 1:18/100.
Main set: 12 x 100 on 1:30, target 1:16-1:20.
That's a valid threshold set under your rules. A generic zone model might instead classify 1:16-1:20 as "Zone 3" per its own percentage table and tell you it's actually VO2max work because it's using a different threshold reference entirely. Neither model is wrong on its own terms. But if you're coaching to your CSS-based system and the software is grading you against a percentage-of-T30 system, every set will look miscategorized even when it's exactly what you intended.
This is the actual failure mode coaches run into with generic analysis tools. Not that the math is bad — it's that the reference point is someone else's.
How to build the check yourself, low-tech version
You don't need software to do this audit. You need three things written down and applied every time you build a set:
- Your test-to-zone conversion (how you go from a time trial to your zone paces)
- Your bandwidths per zone
- Your weekly or mesocycle target distribution across zones
Then, when you write a week, tag every main set with its intended zone based on your own conversion, add up the total zone minutes, and compare that against your target distribution. If you said base phase should run 65 percent aerobic and your actual week comes out at 45 percent because you got excited about a broken 50 set on Wednesday, that's useful information — but it's useful because it's measured against your own target, not a stock one.
Do this by hand for a few weeks before you look for software to do it. You'll find your real tendencies — most coaches drift toward more threshold work than they think, especially late in a season when race-pace feels urgent. Once you know your own drift pattern, you know what to actually watch for.
Where this leaves the search for software
