How a Season Breaks Into Phases
Every season plan is really four phases stacked in order, each one setting up the next.
Base phase. This is where you build the aerobic engine — mitochondrial density, capillarization, stroke efficiency at low-to-moderate effort. Volume is highest here, intensity is lowest. Most work sits in aerobic zones (roughly 65-80% of race pace, or what you'd call Zone 1-2 in an energy-system framework). A typical senior age-group week might run 30,000-45,000 meters across 8-10 sessions, with maybe one quality set per week touching threshold pace and the rest built on aerobic repeats, drill work, and technique-focused kick and pull.
Build phase. Volume plateaus or drops slightly — maybe 10-15% off peak base volume — while intensity climbs. This is where you introduce more threshold and VO2-max work: broken 200s and 400s at or near race pace, lactate-tolerance sets, and race-pace work at meet-relevant distances. The aerobic base doesn't disappear; it becomes the foundation you're now building specific fitness on top of.
Peak phase. Volume drops again, intensity sharpens further. Sets get shorter and faster, with more rest and more attention to stroke rate and race execution. This is where you rehearse race pace under some fatigue, but you're not chasing exhaustion anymore — you're chasing sharpness.
Taper. Volume drops sharply — often 40-60% below peak-phase volume over 7-14 days — while intensity stays high on short, race-pace efforts. The goal is to shed accumulated fatigue while keeping neuromuscular sharpness and feel for race pace. Aligning the Plan to Your Meet Calendar
Work backward from the championship meet, not forward from September.
Start with the taper length you know works for your group — commonly 10-14 days for a senior squad, sometimes shorter for younger age-groupers who don't need as much fatigue shed. Count back from the first championship session to find your last day of peak-volume training. That's your peak phase end date.
From there, block out 3-5 weeks of peak phase, 4-8 weeks of build phase, and let base phase fill whatever remains after you account for early-season meets, holiday breaks, and any mid-season competitions you're using as fitness checks rather than goal meets.
Mid-season meets matter here. If your team has a mid-season championship (a December meet, a mid-year regional), you can't fully taper for it and still peak correctly for the championship meet in March. Two options: treat it as a "mini-peak" with a short 3-5 day step-down in volume, racing through moderate fatigue, or treat it as a straight-through training meet where you tell swimmers explicitly they're racing tired. Common Mistakes
Peaking too early. This usually comes from either starting the build phase too soon or letting a mid-season meet turn into an unplanned full taper. If your swimmers post season-best times in December and flatten out by March, look at whether you cut volume too aggressively for that earlier meet.
Cutting volume too fast entering taper. A 60% volume drop in two days shocks the system and can leave swimmers feeling flat and heavy rather than sharp. Step it down over the taper window rather than cliff-diving on day one.
Letting base phase run too long. Coaches who love aerobic work sometimes hold onto base-phase volume into what should be build phase. If your build phase is only three weeks of real race-pace work before taper, your swimmers arrive undercooked on speed even if they're aerobically fit.
Ignoring the mid-season meet in planning. Treating every meet as a mini-championship, or conversely ignoring the psychological weight of a meet that "doesn't matter," both backfire. Plan it deliberately.
A Simplified Season Outline (Example)
For a mid-season club team building toward a March championship, with a mid-season meet in December:
- September-October (base 1): 6-8 weeks. High volume, low intensity, technique focus. Weekly volume near your team's seasonal max.
- November (base 2 / early build): 4 weeks. Volume holds, threshold work increases. First moderate-intensity race-pace sets appear.
- Early December (mini-peak for meet 1): 1-2 weeks. Short step-down, some race-pace sharpening, not a full taper.
- Mid-December-January (build phase resumes): 6-8 weeks. This is your longest, most important quality block. Volume steady or slightly down, intensity climbing — threshold, VO2-max, and race-pace sets dominate.
- February (peak phase): 3-4 weeks. Volume down 15-20% from build phase. Race-pace and speed work sharpen.
- Late February-March (taper): 10-14 days. Sharp volume drop, high-quality short work, full rest before the championship meet.
Adjust every number to your group's age, training history, and how many meets actually matter this year. The phase order and the backward-planning logic hold regardless of the calendar you're working with.
