AI Swim Workout Generators: What They Can (and Can't) Replace

What a workout generator actually does

A workout generator takes raw input — a whiteboard photo, a voice memo, a typed list of goals — and turns it into a structured set: reps, distance, rest, target pace, and often a stroke or equipment note. It's doing transcription and formatting work, not coaching work. Feed it "8x100 build easy to fast, every 3rd one hard, 20 seconds rest" and it should return a clean line: 8x100 on rest 0:20, odd/even pattern, effort progression labeled by rep. That's the job. It didn't decide the set belonged in Tuesday's practice, and it didn't decide your group needed that stimulus this week.

This matters because the term gets used loosely. A lot of what's marketed as a swim set generator is really a static template library — pick "sprint," get a canned set, pick "endurance," get a different canned set. That's not adaptive. A real generator responds to your specific input and constraints: your athletes' CSS, the rest you actually wrote, the energy system you named, the equipment you specified. Before you rely on any swim workout generator day to day, run it through a few tests:
