Periodization, load management, and technical focus are still entirely yours. The generator formats what you decide. If you ask for "aerobic threshold, 3000m main set" it should give you repeats at threshold pace with short rest — not a sprint set, and not a random 3000m of freestyle. That's the one place it needs real understanding: matching structure to the energy-system intent behind your request, not just the numbers.
A short checklist for evaluating one
Before you rely on any swim workout generator day to day, run it through a few tests:
- Does it preserve notation exactly? Reps, distance, rest, and interval should come out matching what you meant, not rounded or reinterpreted.
- Does it respect energy-system intent? "Threshold," "VO2 max," "recovery," and "sprint" should produce meaningfully different rest ratios and pace targets, not the same set with different labels.
- Can it handle messy input? A blurry whiteboard photo, an accent, background pool noise, shorthand abbreviations — real practices don't come typed and tidy.
- Does it flag ambiguity instead of guessing? If you write "moderate" with no pace reference, a good tool asks or flags it rather than inventing a number.
- Does it give you something to check work against? Zone breakdowns, total volume, or an estimated main-set load are useful outputs beyond just cleaned-up text.
If a tool fails on notation accuracy, it's not saving you time — you'll spend longer proofreading its output than you would have spent typing the set yourself.
